Road Safety Awareness

Today the children had some road safety awareness training from the local authority. The children were taught about safe places to play and how to behave when walking on the footpath near a road. They investigated safe places to cross the road and the importance of walking across the road while holding an adult's hand. They learnt how to STOP, LOOK & LISTEN before crossing the road, even on a zebra crossing (or tiger crossing as one of the children called it today!) The children then went into the hall to put everything they had learnt into practise, with some very fun activities.

This week the children have been introduced to the new phonemes: ur as in turn, ow as in down, oi as in coin and ear as in beard. We have also been practising using these new sounds to decode words and sentences and reading them aloud. Please keep practising the 'tricky words' at home. If your child can read these automatically it will increase their reading confidence and fluency.

This week we have been investigating melting and freezing. The children have been trying to melt ice egg to free the toy penguins stuck inside. You could try this at home, all you need are some small plastic toys which fit inside a deflated balloon. Once the toy is inside, fill the balloon with a little water and then freeze it. Once frozen, peel off the balloon and allow your children to investigate different ways of melting the ice to get their toy back again.

Next week the children will be learning all about Chinese New Year. They will be making Chinese dragons and performing a tradition Chinese dance. They will also be tasting some Chinese food, learning about how Chinese New Year is celebrated and listening to the story of The Great Race.

Please don't forget next week is National Story Telling Week and National Mental Health Week. We are combining these events in school by holding story telling and Mood Boosting sessions each day. You are invited to choose a day next week to come into school at 2.45pm. You will join in with our story telling session at the end of the day and then join in with a short 'Mood Boosting' activity before taking your child home with you. If you are unable to join us next week, links to all the Mood Boosting activities will we sent home, so you can join in at home instead.

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you again next week.

Kind regards

Mrs Dean & Miss Wain
