Happy Lunar New Year!

This week, our focus has been celebrating the Lunar/Chinese new year. We spoke about the Chinese Zodiac signs and identified it is the year of the snake! On Tuesday, the children were very excited to try some traditional Chinese foods including vegetable spring rolls and prawn crackers. All the Badgers had their thumbs up for the prawn crackers, but not so much the vegetable spring rolls! After our food tasting, we practised our 'Chinese dragon dancing' moving all together in one long line in preparation for our dragon dance through the school!
On Wednesday, we read the story 'The Great Race' by Emily Hiles which is the story of the Chinese Zodiac.
Throughout the week, the children have contributed to create a huge cardboard dragons head for our dragon dance. They have also created their own individual dragon mask on lollipop sticks, using the Chinese lucky colours red and gold!

We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents who attended our storytelling and mood boosting sessions to celebrate National Storytelling Week and Children's Mental Health Week. Just a reminder- the 'mood boosting' activities are all accessible via the internet. Just search 'BBC mood boosters' on google and it is the first link.

In Maths this week, we have looked at the composition of numbers 6,7 and 8. What two numbers add together to make 6? 7? 8? This could be something that you demonstrate at home with every day objects (eg:4 pencils, 2 pencils, 6 pencils all together). We have also began to explore odd and even numbers.

In Phonics, we have finished learning all our Phase 3 sounds and tricky words. This week our new sounds are: air (chair, fair) and er (bigger, letter). This week, we have focused on double letter digraphs (two letters that are the same that only make one sound in words). For example: dd in ladder, tt in letter, gg in bigger. We have also introduced reading two syllable words. We use a method called 'chunking'. This is where we split the word into two parts (each syllable), sound and blend each part, then put them back together to read the word.

Over the next two weeks- as part of our Religion and World Views curriculum- our focus is 'Environmentalism'. The children will be reading stories, completing arts and crafts and learning about different environmentalists and their views. We will be discussing how we can reuse, reduce and recycle our materials- including plastic.
Please can you send your child in with 1 plastic bottle each next week. We are going to reuse our plastic in our arts and crafts! We also ask for any plastic bottle caps.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Corrigan and Mrs Chapman
