Week 1 News
Welcome back after the half term break. This week, we have begun our new topic 'Around the Town.' We have started by creating simple maps of routes we make in school, for example walking to the hall for lunch. We made a large map altogether and then many of the children have made their own map during their 'busy time.'
Our phonics lessons this half term are focussed on revising the Phase 3 sounds introduced last half term (ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air and er) and reading and spelling words containing these phonemes. Today we all attempted to write the group sentence: I can put the coat on. I was really impressed with the children's independence and their ability to 'have a go' even if they weren't too sure.
In maths this week, we have been comparing lengths and heights of different objects. We have also been investigating time. The children found out how many times they could write their name in one minute and how many star jumps they could complete in the same time. They also predicted if they could put 10 cubes together in a tower before the one minute timer ran out. Today we made jam sandwiches and then the children cut out and ordered a set of pictures to show what we had done, making sure all the pictures were in the correct sequence.
In PE this week we were focusing on improving our 'fitness', with a lesson all about jumping. The children moved around the hall and every time they came to a red hoop they did 5 star jumps, for a yellow hoop they did 5 bunny hops and for a green hoop they did 5 pencil jumps. This was lots of fun, but very tiring. Please remember PE is on a Tuesday each week, if your child has long hair, they must have their hair tied back from their face for our PE lesson.
Next Thursday (6th March) is World Book Day. This year we are using the story of Little Rabbit Foo Foo to improve the children's fluency through music and rap/chanting. Please don't forget the 'Goonie Competition.' A Goonie is an imaginary creature from the story and your child's Goonie can look like anything they wish. They can draw a picture or make a model of their Goonie. Please make sure all entries are in school by Thursday 6th March for judging - and Good Luck! We would also like to invite our parents into school at 2.30pm on World Book Day to read stories to their child. Please come along to the main entrance and we will escort you down to the classroom where you can spend some time reading to your child and some of their friends. You could bring some of your child's favourite books from home or use some of the books from the classroom. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.
I hope you have a lovely weekend and that the sun continues to shine!
Kind regards
Mrs Dean and Miss Wain
