Animals in School!

Today we had a very exciting start to the day. Mary, a qualified zoologist and animal welfare teacher, came into school with some of her more unusual pets. We met Peach, the South American Chaco Owl, Big Jeff, the Burmese Python, Bean, the Ackie Monitor Lizard, Kevin, the Pac-Man Frog, Morris, the Sphynx Cat, some very big Hissing Cockroaches and some very tiny Marion, Wax Worms. The children's behaviour was excellent and they asked some very interesting questions.

Due to the school hall being full of animals, we had a very exciting picnic lunch in the classrooms today. The children really enjoyed this for a change.

Thank you to everyone who attended the parent and teacher consultation meetings this week. I was lovely to talk about the progress the children are making and their next steps in learning. I hope you found the Early Learning Goals useful, so you know our targets for the end of June.

Next week we will take the children to the Fire Station on Bridlington Road. We will walk the children through the town and down to the Fire Station, pointing out all the shops and town features we pass on the way. This will help the children to identify the main features of the Driffield town centre. At the fire station, the children will learn what a fire fighter does. They will show us what happens when they get an emergency call out. The children will also have the opportunity look around the fire engine and see what it carries out to different emergencies. The children will also have the opportunity to spray the water hose, which sounds very exciting!

Please don't forget our 'Marvellous Maths' Stay & Play session on Thursday 27th March. Please arrive at the main entrance at 2pm, where we will ask you to sign in. You will then come down to the classroom to watch a short demonstration of a maths activity. Then you will have some time to enjoy 'Busy Time,' with your child. The session will finish at 3pm and you will be able to leave with your child at this point.

A few parents asked for examples of phonetically decodable sentences they could write with their child at home. Why not try these two this weekend. Please encourage your child to segment each word with their phonic knowledge and read what they have written so far, so they know what comes next. Don't forget the finger spaces!

  1. Sam got wet in the rain.
  2. Put that soap on the goat.

Have a lovely weekend with your family.

As always, any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Kind regards

Mrs Dean & Miss Wain
