Fire Station and the rest of Week 5!
On Wednesday the children in Hedgehogs and Badgers walked through the town, pointing out all the main features of the town centre and down to the fire station. The children really enjoyed spending some time in the fire station and meeting some of the fire fighters who work there. We learnt all about fire safety and which things are safe and unsafe to play with. The children learnt what do if there was a fire in their house. 'Don't hide and get outside!' The children learnt that if they are upstairs and the fire is stopping them from getting downstairs, they should close their bedroom door, put blankets or a duvet at the bottom of the door, to stop the smoke from getting in, and to go to the window and shout for help. The children also learnt that we should all test our smoke alarms every Tuesday by pushing the button, don't forget 'Test it Tuesday!'
We looked around the fire station and saw the different uniforms the fire fighters wore. We all tried on a fire fighters helmet, which was quiet heavy. We then looked around the fire engine and saw all the hoses and special equipment they carry in an emergency. The children also had the opportunity to climb up and sit in the fire engine, if they wanted to. The highlight of the visit was most certainly, squirting water with the hose. We all got a little bit wet, but it was lots of fun and the children learnt so much.
Thank you to everyone who was able to come along to the Marvellous Maths Stay and Play session yesterday. As always, it was lovely to see you all in school and the children thoroughly enjoy having you to visit and showing you what they have been learning.
This week we have continued our daily phonics lessons, we have been reading and spelling words which end in 's' and 'es'. Words such as: cooks, fights, cheeps, boxes, foxes and torches. Next week we will assess the children again, we will assess their recognition of the Phase 3 sounds (ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air & er). We will also see how many of the Phase 3 tricky words they can read and how many longer words they can decode using their phonics knowledge.
In maths this week, we have completed our end of term assessments, including: counting to 20, number recognition and ordering numbers to 10, identifying one more or less than a single digit number and identifying odd and even numbers. We will use the information from these assessments to inform next term's maths planning.
Next week, we will focus on Easter. The children will learn about the different parts of the Easter story and what happened to Jesus during Holy Week. The children will taste hot cross buns and they will learn about different Easter traditions. On Wednesday morning, the children will visit the church for a Mini Easter Experience, with different parts of the Easter story set up around the church for the children to investigate.
On Friday, we will return to church for a whole school celebration service in the morning.
I know many of the children are very tired this week and that some of you have a busy weekend planned with parties and Mother's Day celebrations, but if you would like to practise writing some sentences, here are two more for you to try:
- Six sheep get in a jeep.
- I can see the light from the torch at night.
I hope you have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards
Mrs Dean & Miss Wain
